About

Frances Clark is a photographer, mixed media artist, ceramicist and maker working out of her studio in Denton, Texas. Her original passion for the arts stemmed from film photography, which then grew to mixed media, and eventually found its way to pottery. She is the owner of Tour de Frances, where she sells her fine art and handmade goods. She is also ingrained in the local maker community and regularly participates in artist markets. Frances received her BS from The University of Texas at Austin in Public Relations and Advertising, and a BA in Visual Arts and Creative Writing at the University of Texas at Dallas. She creates and resides in Little D with her fiance Jesse, and their two dogs and cat, Nina, Captain and Fat Lenny.

Artist Statement

Tour de Frances, founded by artist Frances Clark, is a blend of fine art/photography and handmade ceramics with vintage details. Her shop features 35mm and digital photographic prints; fine art prints, some framed in vintage/upcycled frames; ceramic jewelry; vases and functional ware of various sizes; ring cones; wall hangings; fibers; hand-poured sage bundle candles in handmade vessels, and more. Most of her stoneware ceramics are accented with 22k gold luster. Her 35mm color film photography examines the American travel and road trip experience, combining themes of nostalgia, tourism, commercialism and the possibilities of an open road. Images are often void of a subject and embrace emptiness, quiet, deadpan and the imperfect, and they welcome grain, flare, movement and blur, qualities found in the beauty and often unexpected nature of film. Some images are altered, others seem as if they could be featured on a postcard in a 1980s-era gift shop. Frances' work aims to embody the earthiness of the mountains and desert, enriched with celestial, folk and nature-forward themes. Her photography, in particular, takes viewers from Marfa to Vegas, Utah to the deserts of Arizona, and many places in-between. An old soul at heart, she hopes to capture the once populated tourist spots of Route 66, the joy of a state fair, the bustle of Sin City, and the softness of wild grasses growing in seemingly untouched lands.
