Surprise Arts invites artists or artist teams to submit qualifications for community-engaged art projects as part of upcoming programming across the city. We are seeking artists who create work with the community, not just for it. We are interested in projects that invite participation, spark curiosity, and build a sense of belonging.
We’re looking for artists who:
Have experience working with communities or public audiences, including experience teaching or guiding workshops of any kind
Create work that is accessible and inclusive
Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively
Application materials include 5 samples of past work, responses about artistic practice and community engagement, and required acknowledgments confirming originality of work (no AI-generated content, and AZ resident certification).
Compensation will vary by project and be defined in separate contracts for commissioned work. We take pride in establishing ethical project budgets that align with industry standards, ensuring fair compensation for artists and responsible stewardship of public funds.
