BK McCallum is currently a Professor of Art at Garden City Community College on the high plains of Western Kansas, . He earned his MFA in sculptural ceramics at Kansas State University, where he studied under the mentorship of Yoshiro Ikeda, . A skilled potter and sculptor, McCallum splits his studio time between creating functional ware and crafting narrative sculptures that often feature the human figure, . His work has achieved national recognition in publications like Pottery Making Illustrated and Lark Books' 500 Figures in Clay, and he actively leads workshops at colleges and art centers throughout the United States, . As a forward-thinking educator, he is a member of the AI leadership team at GCCC and integrates artificial intelligence into his teaching, experimenting with tools like Midjourney to transform creativity for the future, . A dedicated leader in his field, he has served as the Humanities and Fine Art Division Chair, President of the Kansas Artist Craftsman Association, and Chair of the Student Learning Assessment Team,

Artist Statement

BK McCallum earned his MFA in sculptural ceramics at Kansas State University under Yoshiro Ikeda. He moved from the Majestic flint hills in 2003 to the wind swept high plains of Western Kansas. BK McCallum is currently Professor of Art at Garden City Community College in Southwest Kansas. McCallum’s sculptural work has earned numerous accolades in juried shows for nearly three decades. His art and methods are featured in Lark Publications 500 Figures in Clay and Pottery Making Illustrated. McCallum has an extensive show record including the Artist Self Portrait Invitational at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, KS and The Shafer Gallery in Great Bend, KS. McCallum leads workshops at colleges, universities and art centers throughout the U.S. As a skilled potter, he splits studio time between functional and sculptural art.
