About

Kara Crowley is a New Orleans Native, Houston based visual artist and arts educator whose practice centers on storytelling through portraiture, honoring identity, culture, and community. Working primarily with acrylic/watercolor on wood, she incorporates pyrography(wood burned art) and layered textural elements such as oil pastels to build depth and dimension. The act of burning into the surface is both physical and symbolic, etching memory, history, and emotion directly into the material. Through both her studio practice and community engagement, Crowley’s work functions as artistic expression and advocacy. She seeks to preserve stories, amplify visibility, and celebrate the depth and vibrancy of black & brown culture in the South; honoring those who shaped the past while inspiring those who continue to build the future. Ultimately, her work invites collective reflection, connection, and responsibility in how stories are remembered and carried forward. Email for questions/inquiries.

Artist Statement

As a Houston-based visual artist, my practice centers on storytelling through portraiture—honoring identity, culture, and community. I primarily work with acrylic on wood, using pyrography and other textural elements such as oil pastels or molding paste to build depth and dimension. The act of burning into the surface becomes both physical and symbolic—etching memory, history, and emotion directly into the material. Each portrait is created with intention, serving not only as a visual likeness but as a layered narrative that reflects presence, resilience, and belonging. Another defining element that's sometimes used in my work is the use of space. Through deliberate composition, I draw attention to the figure while allowing the surrounding environment to breathe. This balance invites viewers to look beyond the surface—to reflect on visibility and representation: what is centered, what is erased, and what deserves acknowledgment.
