About

Sarah Pickett grew up in Dallas, Texas interested in everything from swimming to saxophone. Art was always present in her life thanks to her parents, but in an effort to differentiate herself, she majored in biology at Trinity University in San Antonio. While there, she was a high jumper on the track team and lead alto in jazz band, but more importantly, she discovered her love of printmaking. She enjoys camping and hiking and those experiences—along with her biology background—influence and inspire her art. She received her MFA in Visual Art with Honors from the University of Kansas in 2021. Sarah taught screenprinting and relief courses at UNT for two years after which she began coaching for Pegasus Aquatics to spend more time making art. In addition, she teaches printmaking courses at Dallas College’s Brookhaven campus. She has shown her work around the country and regularly participates in printmaking conferences and art fairs.

Artist Statement

I am a printmaker whose work is a mix of whimsical pieces that focus on animals—mostly birds, but also mice, bears, and dinosaurs—and pieces that focus on how one’s method of movement through a landscape impacts our perception of it, and how we remember the places we have been. Those works include: pieces about memories sparked by location; pieces about forgetting over time detail of the places we have been; pieces based on the satellite imagery of places important to me; and pieces about the interconnectedness of different places and the way memories of those places intermingle in my mind. All these ideas stem from my love of hiking and camping as well as my background in biology and interest in the natural world. While all my work relates to nature, there is a lot of variety in how I represent that. Most pieces are to an extent realistic, but my satellite image-based pieces are abstract and focus on pattern and texture. My methods are firmly based in printmaking and also include textiles and embroidery. I choose the type of printmaking based on the needs of the image, so I am not tied to a specific type of printmaking. My favorite and most used techniques include relief printing, photolithography, and screenprinting.
