Artist Statement
Hi, I’m Sharon Smith, a self-taught artist based in Texarkana, Texas. I am dedicated to the "soft arts"—the creation of one-of-a-kind sculptures that bridge the gap between childhood wonder and fine art. From classic bears to ethereal fantasy creatures, my work lives at the intersection of nature, emotion, and play.
Each character begins as a humble sketch, but they truly come to life through a tactile evolution of textiles, embroidery, buttons, beads, and hand-selected embellishments, including vintage and found items. Because my process is intuitive and my materials are often reclaimed, no two pieces are ever identical. Every sculpture I create is an adventure—a journey into a whimsical realm where imagination knows no bounds. My goal is to bring joy and a touch of magic into everyday life; my characters are more than objects, they are unique storytellers.
Deeply inspired by the natural world, I also extend my creative practice into eco-conscious sustainability by creating washable, reversible, and reusable cotton shopping bags. I aim to ensure that the environment which inspires my sculptures is protected for generations to come.
