Sharon Smith, based in Texarkana, Texas, is a self-taught artist whose journey began from necessity and evolved into a passion for "soft art" sculptures. Her work beautifully bridges the gap between childhood wonder and fine art. Each one-of-a-kind character—ranging from classic bears to ethereal fantasy creatures—begins as a sketch and comes to life through a tactile evolution of new and reclaimed textiles, fibers, embroidery and many other types of embellishments. Every piece is a unique, collectible work of art with its own story to tell. An intuitive creator deeply inspired by the environment, Sharon also extends her practice into sustainability by producing high-quality, reusable cotton shopping bags. Whether she is watching birds in her garden or finding inspiration alongside her beloved pets, her work remains rooted in a mission to bring joy, magic, and eco-conscious craftsmanship to everyday life.

Artist Statement

Hi, I’m Sharon Smith, a self-taught artist based in Texarkana, Texas. I am dedicated to the "soft arts"—the creation of one-of-a-kind sculptures that bridge the gap between childhood wonder and fine art. From classic bears to ethereal fantasy creatures, my work lives at the intersection of nature, emotion, and play. Each character begins as a humble sketch, but they truly come to life through a tactile evolution of textiles, embroidery, buttons, beads, and hand-selected embellishments, including vintage and found items. Because my process is intuitive and my materials are often reclaimed, no two pieces are ever identical. Every sculpture I create is an adventure—a journey into a whimsical realm where imagination knows no bounds. My goal is to bring joy and a touch of magic into everyday life; my characters are more than objects, they are unique storytellers. Deeply inspired by the natural world, I also extend my creative practice into eco-conscious sustainability by creating washable, reversible, and reusable cotton shopping bags. I aim to ensure that the environment which inspires my sculptures is protected for generations to come.
